“It is not going to be easy, but every single step we take is going to be worth it.”

The Rosa Portillo family is a big, tight-knit family who loves spending time together. Luis, a 23-year-old Utility worker, is working towards his homeownership dream for himself, his sister, Saudy, and niece, Fabiola.

Luis’ niece, Fabiola, is very smart and loves to play in the backyard while spending time with her grandparents. Her mom, Saudy, plans to obtain a college degree in order to provide a better life for Fabiola. They are ready for a home that will give them the space to grow and succeed.

The three family members currently live with Luis and Saudy’s father and the rest of their siblings. This limited space leaves Fabiola sharing a room with Saudy. “We don’t have much privacy because other family members are always in and out of our spaces. I am very thankful to have a place to stay, but Habitat has been the best thing to happen to us. We will now have our own space. A private, quiet home.” When they were accepted into the program, Luis said, “We were all so happy, we couldn’t believe it. We knew there would be a lot of work to do, but we were so excited! Finally our dream to have a home was about to come true.”

“We have learned a lot during our sweat equity hours. I have never worked in construction, but now learned everything about the interior and exterior of the house. It has been a great experience, with an even better outcome.” Luis says he is thankful for all of the volunteers who are helping to make other people’s dreams come true. “Every single person you meet at Habitat is there to help you in every single way.”

“I am looking forward to the tranquility and peace. I will be able to sleep, cook, and enjoy self-care on my own time. Saudy and Fabiola will have their own space. I will always be grateful. We are ready to start making memories!”
