“Receiving my home will be a blessing, a dream, and an accomplishment for something that I set out to do for my son.”

Katria Rivera is a hard-working single mother to her three-year-old son, Dylan. Dylan loves playing with dinosaurs, toy trucks, and toy buses. This mother-son pair loves to spend time together by going to parks and pools. They both share a strong love for the water and enjoy swimming whenever they can. Katria was accepted into the Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Program in March of 2022 and is set to receive the keys to her home in June. In the span of three months, Katria has already earned her 350 sweat equity hours so that she and her son can have a brand new forever home for them to grow and thrive in.

When Dylan was only three months old, Katria made the difficult decision to move herself and her son to Florida from Puerto Rico and away from her family. “I made the decision to move to a place I knew nothing about and where I did not know the language they spoke.” She was determined to give her family a better life. When they started their journey in America, it was difficult for Katria to find a place that would take care of her son while she tried to find work. She also did not have a vehicle at the time. Thankfully, she had a friend that was able to help her out for the time being. Starting out, she roomed with a friend, but she found that it was not enough space for herself and her son. Later, she found a 2-bedroom apartment with a roommate, but it came with many maintenance issues that made it uncomfortable and unsafe to live in.

Moving into a Habitat home will by life changing for Katria and Dylan. “All I want is a home for my son so he can have his own space to grow up and will have a stable environment where he does not have to move every now and then.” With her dedication date just around the corner. Katria is very excited for this new chapter in her life. “Receiving my home will be a blessing, a dream, and an accomplishment for something that I set out to do for my son.”
