“Home is where peace, protection and safety is.”

Rosalyn Mims is an H.R. associate for the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority and a single mother to her 14-year-old son, Malachi, who is eager to learn and grow on her journey towards homeownership. Malachi and his mom are very close with each other. They love to spend time together as a family and understand each other’s struggles and gains. Rosalyn loves to teach her son life lessons that he can keep with him forever. In his free time, Malachi likes to watch cooking shows and currently participates in his high school’s culinary arts program. We can’t wait to see what awesome dishes he will cook up in his new kitchen! He also enjoys playing basketball, golf, and video games.

The lack of affordable homes has been a struggle for the Mims Family. “It’s hard to stay afloat being a single parent with one income while the cost of living continues to go up every year,” Rosalyn says. She has lived in multiple apartments and has come to realize that no matter how much rent you pay, there is nothing like being able to own your own home.

Rosalyn was extremely happy when she learned she was accepted into the Habitat program. “I felt like I could breathe a little knowing there would be a better way of living coming down the road. I realized this program would be challenging and would require a lot, but my motto is ‘You work toward what you want in life’, so I’m ready to take on the challenge!” There are so many things the family is looking forward to in their new home such as a garage, a yard to spend time in, not having to listen to noisy neighbors, and no longer having to walk up a ton of stairs!

Volunteers are such an important part of the Habitat for Humanity organization and mission. Rosalyn says “Being a Habitat volunteer helps someone reach their dream of becoming a homeowner. Habitat is a great company to volunteer for because you can actually see that your hard work and time is being put to a good use and is benefiting the life of someone else!”. If you are interested in volunteering at one of our jobsites, in the ReStore, or at one of our events, please check out our Volunteer Page on our website for more information on how to get involved.

“I can take ownership of my home and say I put blood sweat and tears into building my house from the ground up!”
