“My house will be a place of peace, faith, hope and love.”
Nykisha Davis is a single mother, student, worker, and fitness guru! She is currently studying Education at USF St.Pete and will graduate in December of this year. In the Spring she hopes to apply for the Masters program where she will earn her degree in applied Behavioral Analysis. She is also employed at three jobs, working for the City of St.Petersburg Parks & Rec for 20 years, Pinellas County Schools for 17 years, and Carlton Manor Group home for 6 years. This impressive mother is raising two children: her son, La’Bron, who is 17-years-old and her daughter, Lauryn, who is is almost 14. La’Bron loves music and is the Drum Major at his high school. He enjoys comedy and action movies, learning new culinary techniques, and working in the media department at his church. He hopes to attend North Carolina A&T University after he graduates from high school next year. Lauryn is a track star that participates in four events for her school’s track team. She also enjoys practicing cosmetology on her mannequin and is currently learning how to braid hair and paint acrylic nails.
The Davis Family has lived in several apartments over the years. Currently, they are living in a two bed-one bath apartment in which the rent is astronomical. Her children have to share a room together and the entire family shares one bathroom, which can be frustrating and challenging for everyone. “I know that both of them are growing up and need their own personal space,” Nykisha says. She is excited to have a home where everyone is able to have a space to call their own.
Acceptance into the Habitat program has left Nykisha feeling “elated, humbled, blessed, and honored”. She expects her life to change drastically after completing the process and is eager to sign the final documents and turn the key to her new home. She is excited to have family and friends over for Sunday dinner and celebrations. “I know I will have given my children a blue print of what it is to be consistent, disciplined, and patient.”
