“Having somewhere to call your own and having that security is a feeling that is unmatched. It’s something that I have to obtain and I won’t give up until that house is mine.”

Mikayla Sampson is a Mental Health Transporter for Sunstar Paramedics and a part-time restaurant cook who is looking forward to stability in her new forever home. She is a 30-year-old single woman who is very adventurous and loves the outdoors, music, and traveling. “My passion is cooking,” she tells us. “I love to cook for family and large groups of people. I believe it’s the southern hospitality in me.” Mikayla was born in a small town in North Carolina and was raised by her single mother who she is currently living with. She has worked in the healthcare field for over six years, but her dream is to own her own culinary business.

For five years, Mikayla lived in an apartment that had not been renovated since the 80s. Recently, the new property owners decided to increase the rent dramatically without doing any renovations. Mikayla made the decision not to renew her lease and has been living with her mother for a while. Before applying to the Habitat program, she felt excited, but also nervous. “I thought I had to have children to be accepted into the program,” she explained. “I’ve never owned a house before. My mother was pushing for me to get into the program. I knew about Habitat, but I didn’t know enough. Considering that my mother is a homeowner, I’m glad I listened to her because she always knows what’s best.”

In her brand new forever home, Mikayla is looking forward to creating memories, having family over, and being able to wake up early on a Saturday to mow the lawn. She is very eager to meet her new neighbors and to call her house her own. The dream of homeownership for Mikayla and many other families in the Habitat program would not be possible without the financial support from our donors and sponsors. “Right now, I’m a little all over the place as far as my every day routine. In the future I know for a fact I’ll be able to achieve and strive to do a lot more with my career that I want to have and hopefully having my own business.”
