“My house will be my happy place, safe place, my security, and my own home.”

Lena King is on her journey towards homeownership with Habitat so that she can provide a safe and affordable home for her son and granddaughter. For the last three years, Lena has worked as a Confirmation Coordinator at Matrix Medical Center. Her son, Deaundrick, is 15 years old and loves football, basketball, and his PS5. His mother describes him as a “very loving and caring” and he loves to look out for his friends and to spread positivity. Lena’s granddaughter, Arreona, is 7-years-old and is very shy, but loving and sweet. She loves basketball, school and, going to camp after school.

With the continuous rising rent prices in our community, Lena has found herself living paycheck to paycheck in order to provide her family with a place to live. “With GOD I was able to do it and still survived, but being that there are other household expenses that had to be paid it’s been a really hard road,” Lena explains to us. “I thought about applying for the program for about two years. I put my fears to the side and finally applied. When I came inside the office and was given the news I felt overjoyed because I knew this would change my life for the better it was one of the best feelings I have ever experienced.”

In her new home, Lena is most looking forward to creating memories, planning family gatherings, and having a nice backyard to watch her grandkids play and enjoy themselves in. A safe and affordable home just like Lena’s is in reach for many local families in our community! If you would like to refer someone to the program, or you would like to apply yourself, please visit our Apply Page on our website for more information.
