“My house will be my refuge and where I go when my heart is overwhelmed and I need to be led to the rock that is higher than I.”

Elizabeth Brown is a single mother to 4-year-old Ma’khadiance and has worked in the health insurance field for five years. The family of two is on their journey towards homeownership with Habitat for Humanity. The mommy-daughter duo are very close with one another and enjoys taking trips to the beach and being silly. Elizabeth is in the process of teaching her daughter sign language and Spanish. “Any chance I have to show her or teach her something new, she’s always willing to learn and I really appreciate her about that,” Elizabeth says. Ma’khadiance loves anything to do with water, especially pools, beaches, and water parks. She also enjoys flowers, gymnastics, and cheerleading.

Currently, the family lives in an apartment complex where maintenance requests go unnoticed. Gambling occurs at the local park and the neighborhood is overall not safe for Elizabeth to raise her daughter. “I have just been focused on providing my daughter with a better and more spacious environment so she can be as successful as possible,” Elizabeth tells us. When the family learned they were accepted into the Habitat program, Elizabeth says she was ecstatic. “I first thanked God. I also felt like I had accomplished something for my daughter. I felt so many blessings we’re headed my way.”

Elizabeth is very excited to begin her sweat equity hours. “I expect to learn different techniques to maintain my new home. I expect to meet wonderful people with different life experiences. I expect to learn everything there is to know with the classes and how to maintain my credit score and budgeting.” In her new home, she is most excited to have a yard that Ma’khadiance can play in and having a space that the two can grow in together.
