“My house will be a safe environment for my daughter.”

Latosha Haughbrook is a single mother who is working two jobs to help achieve her dream of homeownership for herself and her 11-year-old daughter, Markiesha. This hardworking mom is an Office Clerk at a local high school and also works at a recreation center with elementary school children. She and her daughter are very close with one another. Markiesha is in 6th grade and loves to dance, make people laugh, and spend time with family and friends.

Currently, the family of two is living in a 2-bedroom apartment that has been neglected by management and maintenance staff. Their A/C has been broken for a while and is causing water to leak onto their bedroom floor. The upstairs neighbors also have water that leaks into their apartment. “My daughter is afraid to sleep in her room because somehow lizards are squeezing through the cracks and getting into her bedroom,” Latosha tells us. The mother-daughter pair is very excited to receive the keys to their brand new Habitat home where they will no longer have to deal with broken appliances and unreliable landlords.

When Latosha first learned that she was accepted into the Habitat program, she was in complete shock. “When I get my house, it will be a dream come true.” Latosha is very excited to see the building process from start to finish and to help swing a hammer along the way. “My house will be a safe environment for my daughter,” she says. For more information on how to apply or refer a friend to the Habitat program, please visit the Apply Page on our website.

“I will have an affordable house to live in. It will be a home that I know will be mine once I finish the payments. My daughter will have her own space.”
